Join us for Jam for Justice: Celebrating Cinco de Mayo on Thursday, May 5th at 5 pm.

End of the academic year at UWGB is an occasion for a thoughtful celebration. Every May, the Mauthe Center – a nonprofit located on the UWGB campus – hosts Jam for Justice, an event aimed at bringing people together around a meaningful cause. This year, our event falls on Cinco de Mayo, giving us a unique opportunity to celebrate a Mexican victory (not their Independence Day! ;o) over the French at the battle of Puebla and a chance to embrace the Hispanic culture.

Join us on Thursday, May 5th at 5 pm as we share authentic Mexican foods (chicken mole, horchata, esquite, rice pudding, and chips and salsa), music, and games while dispelling the myths and stereotypes associated with this rich culture.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted to benefit our effort to build a clean water-well in Africa.

For questions email us at info@mcenter.org, call us at (920)465-5133 or visit www.mcenter.org for directions.

In the spirit of our commitment to creation care, we will kick off this year’s Earth Day activities and Global Youth Service Day in Northeast Wisconsin with the screening of Green Fire, a full-length feature documentary film about the life and works of Aldo Leopold, on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 7 pm at the Center.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to show such a unique film — celebrating a powerful legacy and absorbing important lessons on creation care — and are especially grateful to Alison Frazier for helping make this event possible,” said Hung Nguyen, our executive director.

Leopold is known as one of the most prominent environmentalists of the 20th century, a legend whose life and works have shaped the modern environmental movement by inspiring us to see the natural world as a community to which we, too, belong. Green Fire is the first film of its kind and on this topic.

The film is shown in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay environmental club, PEAC, and will also include a speaker, Stanley Temple, a well-known ecologist. The event is free and open to the public.

From the film synopsis:

Green Fire explores Leopold’s personal journey of observation and understanding and reveals how his ideas resonate today with people across the entire American landscape, from inner cities to the remotest wildlands. The film challenges viewers to contemplate their own relationship with the land community.

The film features commentary from conservation leaders and practitioners, including scientists, ranchers, scholars, and three of Aldo Leopold’s children—Nina, Carl, and Estella. Dr. Curt Meine, Leopold’s biographer, serves as the on-camera guide to his life and legacy, making the connections between Leopold’s ideas and their expression in the conservation movement today.

The Mauthe Center is launching its first annual signature fundraiser Dozen Denominations Dinner, scheduled for March 24, 2011 at 7 pm at the Center. The event is uniquely designed to reflect the Center’s mission of bringing people together around a table for a conversation and a cause greater than ourselves.

On March 24 at 7 pm, a dozen faith communities will offer authentic dishes for all to taste and then vote on; the students at the University will provide entertainment in the form of music and displays and all attendees will be entered into a drawing for a number of prizes, including a $500 raffle!

All proceeds will benefit the Mauthe Center, and dollars raised in 2011 will be used to help us complete our effort to engage UWGB students in learning about the shortage of clean water around the world by building a well in Africa during the summer of 2011.

Since this is a new event, the Center’s plan is to place it on a trial for 3 years. After the third year, all 36 recipes (12 from each year) will be combined into a cookbook of local culinary specialties and the book will be sold locally and on the Center’s website.

The cost for community members is $50 a ticket.

The cost for students is $20 a ticket. (Each student will also receive a free Mauthe Center t-shirt!)

Get your tickets today as space is limited!

You can purchase them online,

By sending a check payable to the Mauthe Center,

We will be hosting our first Feast of Nations on Thursday, February 10 at 6 pm, bringing students from all walks of life together to celebrate cultural exchange while enjoying and sharing in international cuisine and live music. In addition to the Mauthe Center, the event is co-sponsored by the UWGB International Club, UWGB Alumni Association and other partners.

Students will contribute meals from Bulgaria, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Northern Ireland, and other countries and a group of UWGB students will perform live music. The attendees will get a chance to learn more about individual cultures and the origins of each of the meals, shared Judy Thompson, the Mauthe Center intern and coordinator of the event.

“I am excited to bring everyone together to share about their individual backgrounds and have some great food,” said Thompson, who herself is an international student from Northern Ireland. “We don’t often get a chance to spend time with each other and exchange our cultural experiences. The Feast of Nations is a perfect opportunity to do just that,” she concluded.

The event is free and open to the public, but donations are welcomed.

The Mauthe Center has been selected by Youth Service America to lead Global Youth Service Day 2011 in Northeast Wisconsin and engage dozens of community organizations and 1,000 youth in service to others.

The Richard Mauthe Center for Faith, Spirituality, and Social Justice has been selected by Youth Service America as one of 75 agencies in the entire country to lead Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) 2011 in Northeast Wisconsin, April 15-17, 2011.

“This is a special honor and a unique opportunity to live out our core value of social justice, which places service to others at the heart of its principles,” said Hung Nguyen, executive director of the Mauthe Center.

Established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world and the only such event dedicated to children and youth. Each year, the event mobilizes more than one million young people, ages 5-25, on all six continents and over 100 countries, in the effort to celebrate service, service learning and the impact youth makes in communities throughout the year.

The 75 Lead Agencies are awarded a $2,000 mini-grant to help offset costs associated with the event and are expected to partner with various community organizations in involving hundreds of young people in serving others during that weekend.

The Mauthe Center hopes to engage one thousand young people in doing service during that weekend in our community and has already secured key partnerships with the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Brown County, the American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter, Girl Scouts of Northwestern Great Lakes, the Notre Dame de la Baie Academy, St. NorbertCollege, various UWGB partners, the Volunteer Centers of Brown County, Door County, and East Central Wisconsin and others.

This year’s effort in Northeast Wisconsin will place a special focus on the young people serving the elderly, however, organizations are encouraged to submit all types of service proposals.

“All 75 lead agencies participating in Global Youth Service Day have the common goal of providing youth with opportunities to serve their communities and solve the pressing problems of our time,” said Steve Culbertson, Youth Service America president and CEO. “I am delighted that the Mauthe Center and their partners in Northeast Wisconsin are creatively inspiring young people to build intergenerational relationships with senior citizens through service.”

Although the official kick off date for the effort was January 17 – the Martin Luther King, Jr.Day – the solicitation for service sites began this week and it was marked with a service project planned by the Mauthe Center’s Doin’ Good for Others initiative in collaboration with the Danz Elementary afterschool program and the Boys and Girls Club. It engaged children in making handcrafted Valentine’s Day cards for the Meals on Wheels program, sponsored by the Agingand Disability Resource Center of Brown County.

Between MLK Day on one end and Global Youth Service Day on the other, the Mauthe Center’s Doin’ Good for Others will continue to engage dozens of UWGB students and others in doing service around the community.

For more information or to join in the effort, check out the GYSD PAGE!

Richard Mauthe. The event begins at 7:00 pm on the first Tuesday of the month and includes heavy hors d’oeuvres (selected in consultation with the speaker), music, and a talk on the topic of spirituality seen through the lens of individual guest speakers.
About the Rabbi

Rabbi Shaina Bacharach has been the spiritual leader of Congregation Cnesses Israel since August 2003. She was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary. Before entering JTS, Rabbi Bacharach had a varied career. She attended the University of Oklahoma and earned a bachelor of science in nursing. She also worked as a free-lance writer, including work on the Bobbsey Twin series and Nancy Drew. The rabbi’s love of Judaism and Torah study led her to teach Hebrew and Judaica at the Solomon Schechter day school in Oklahoma City and at the supplementary school and to assume a number of roles supporting Jewish life.

Rabbi Shaina works actively to foster positive interfaith relations in Green Bay. She is deeply involved in all areas of synagogue life, including pastoral care, education, encouraging congregational involvement, and fostering a sense of spirituality.

The Ecumenical Center Board of Directors announced this morning that it is changing the name of the organization from The Ecumenical Center to The Richard Mauthe Center for Faith, Spirituality, and Social Justice. The decision comes as a result of Center’s desire to honor the founder and guiding spirit behind the Ecumenical Center – The Rev. Richard Mauthe.

The name change will be made official on Tuesday, November 2 at 7 PM at The Mauthe Center during the monthly Tuesdays with Mauthe program, hosted by the Center. The event will include heavy hors d’oeuvres and a talk by Fr. Mauthe on how it all began; the vision, the inspiration, and the hope behind an ecumenical dream in Northeast Wisconsin.

The event is open and free to the public and everyone is encouraged to join in celebrating this important change. RSVPs are required, however. Please call 920-465-5133 or email info@ecuwgb.org to make your reservations.

For further information about the change, rationale, background and information about the Center click here.

For media and interview requests, please contact Adi Redzic at 920.465.5133 or aredzic@ecuwgb.org
